Terry Francona was a son of Tito Francona and Roberta Jackson, and grew up in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, where he went to New Brighton Area High School, and started playing baseball there. He later studied at the University of Arizona, and won the 1980 College World Series with the Wildcats, before the Montreal Expos selected him as the 22nd pick overall in the 1980 Major League Baseball (MLB) amateur draft.
Francona played for Montreal from 1981 to 1985, and then represented the Chicago Cubs (1986), Cincinnati Reds (1987), and Cleveland Indians (1988), while his final years as a professional baseball player Terry spent with the Milwaukee Brewers (1989–1990).
