Born in Yonkers, New York, Ford was a constant face on television, starring in shows like “Harlem Nights” in 1989 and “Across the Track” in 1990, but it was in 1992 that he got his big break. Ford was included in the television show “Martin”, in which he played Thomas Straw, best friend of the main character played by Martin Lawrence. His character served as the voice of reason and the subject of most jokes by Lawrence. His performance in the show earned him a nomination in the 1996 Image Awards, in the “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series” category. His appearance in the show made him a household name in the United States and increased his net worth.
After five seasons “Martin” ended, but Ford’s career didn’t stop there. Moving from comedy, in 1998 he was included in the television drama “New York Undercover” playing Lieutenant Malcolm Barker. He also appeared in the shows “The Parkers” and “The Jamie Foxx Show”.
Aside from being a regular in the world of television, Ford also has his fare share of movie projects. He has starred in films like “First Impression”, “Hillbilly Highway”, “Unspoken Words”, “No More Games” and “Hard Lessons” to name a few.
Ford also honed his talents behind the screen by directing and producing various projects. Some of the films that he had worked on are “At Mamu’s Feet”, “Breeze”, “Pantherless” and “Conflict of Interest”. His movie ventures and projects made him more well-known and helped in raising his net worth.
Ford has also spent time on stage, joining several theatre productions in which he acted, produced and directed, including “Jonin”, South of Where We Live”, “Monsoon Christmas”, “Living Room”, and “Distant Fires”, and his performances were also recognized by various award giving bodies.
Today, Ford is still active in Hollywood where he recently joined TV One’s “Who’s Got Jokes?” Ford served as a judge, and was dubbed as “The Pope of Comedy” in the comedy competition; the show lasted for four seasons. He has also co-authored twelve award-winning children’s books.
In terms of his personal life, Ford married Gina Sasso in 1997, but they separated in 2014. Ford also was involved with Vanessa Simmons with whom he has a child. The two also separated. Along with his professional success, he also started the foundation “Be Still And Know, Inc.” Ford uses his books and speaks in different schools, churches, children’s hospitals, youth centres and other venues to encourage children and inspire them to be the best version of themselves and not be corrupted by the negative events around them.
