Born in Wau, South Sudan, Maker comes from a small family with three other brothers – his parents are descendants from the Dinka People. Maker also had a rough childhood, having experienced war in his homeland. His uncle was able to arrange for him and his brother Matur to escape the civil war to Uganda, and eventually settle in Australia.

At the age of 14, Maker fell in love with soccer and was discovered by Edward Smith, who is known to help migrant children receive opportunities not otherwise easily presented to them. Smith helped him play basketball for the St. George Basketball Association in 2011, until he left to attend a camp in Texas in the US. Maker first attended Metairie Park Country Day School, but eventually transferred and settled at Carlisle School in Martinsville, Virginia. While at Carlisle, during his sophomore year he became Gatorade Virginia Boys Basketball Player of the Year, having led the team to the state championship.

In 2014, Maker once again moved to attend Orangeville District Secondary School. After supposedly graduating in 2015, he decided to stay for one more year despite being a potential five-star recruit, and being courted by top schools.

In 2016, Maker declared that he was to enter the 2016 draft, although he faced some controversy as he needs to at least have a year in college, but was able to convince the NBA that he stayed another year at Orangeville Prep as a post-graduate student by his own will. He was then able to declare for the 2016 NBA Draft Combine.

Maker was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks as the 10th overall pick, the first high school player to be taken in the first round after the 2005 Collective Bargaining Agreement of the NBA came into effect.

Maker made his debut for the Bucks late in 2016 in a loss to Detroit, made his first start in January 2017, and has now played almost 100 games, consistently improving his statistics.

In terms of his personal life, Maker is still single. He is now also an Australian Citizen.
