Tom grew up listening to James Brown, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley among other artists that were often played on the radio. He took saxophone lessons while in school, but soon switched to guitar, and just two years later he formed his first band. Little by little his musical aspirations grew higher, but also he didn’t let his education suffer because of his musical ambitions. He moved to San Jose where he attended University, and was part of numerous San Jose bands. Thanks to his involvement in the San Jose music scene, he befriended Skip Spence, who was the drummer in Jefferson Airplane, and one of the co-founders of Moby Grape. It was Skip who introduced Tom to John Hartman, and the two started the band Pud, in addition of Greg Murphy as a bass player. Slowly they started building a name for themselves by playing in San Jose bars, but Greg Murphy left the group, and soon Dave Shogren joined as a replacement, and the trio was also joined by Patrick Simmons. Soon they changed the name to The Doobie Brothers, and went on to international success.

Their first, self-titled album came out in 1971, but it reached only 210th place on the charts, however, their second album was a breakthrough. It was released in 1972 under the title “Toulouse Street”, and reached No. 21 on the Billboard 200 chart, while it also achieved platinum status in the US, which increased Johnston’s net worth considerably. Tom stayed in the band until 1975, and oversaw the releases of “The Captain and Me”, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and achieved double platinum status, then “What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits”, which landed at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 chart, and achieved double platinum status in the USA, and silver in the UK. He worked on the album “Stampede”, which went out in 1975, but during the following tour he started experiencing severe health problems regarding stomach ulcers, that had hampered him since high school.

As a result, Tom left the group, and spent several months recuperating, and once he was 100% recovered, he started a solo career, recording two albums “Everything You’ve Heard Is True” in 1979, and “Still Feels Good” (1981). He also recorded the song “Where Are You Tonight”, which was used for the soundtrack for the Oscar Award- winning film “Dirty Dancing” (1987), starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. His net worth was still rising.

Replaced by Michael McDonald in The Doobie Brothers, the band switched to soul and jazz but continued successfully until disbandment in 1982. The group reformed in 1987 with Tom also a member, and since then they have released five albums, including “Cycles” (1989), “Brotherhood” (1991), “World Gone Crazy” (2010), and “Southbound” (2014).

Regarding his personal life, Tom is married to Diane, and the couple has one child together, daughter Lara Johnston, who is also a singer and songwriter.
