Tom Waits Net Worth $25 Million
Tom Waits is the son of Jesse Frank Waits and Alma Fern, both school teachers. His parents divorced when he was 11, and Tom stayed with his mother in Whittier, and later moved to National City, San Diego County, where he taught himself to play the piano at his neighbor’s place. Tom went to the Hilltop High School in Chula Vista and played in the band called The Systems, and had his first job at a pizza restaurant in 1965.
Waits got his first paid gig at the Heritage nightclub in San Diego in 1970, receiving $6 per night. Tom served with the United States Coast Guard, and after discharging, tried to get a contract by performing at The Troubadour and the Echo Park in Los Angeles in 1971. He met Herb Cohen and Frank Zappa, who gave him an opportunity, so Tom recorded series of demo recordings that would later become known.
Waits signed a professional contract with Asylum Records in 1972, and released his debut studio album called “Closing Time” in 1973. The album was well-received, but Waits was still relatively unknown; however he would continue to release another album in each of the next five years. “The Heart of Saturday Night” came out in 1974, “Nighthawks at the Diner” in 1975, and “Small Change” in 1976, which was a commercial success, as Waits reached the Billboard Top 100 Albums chart for the first time in his career. “Foreign Affairs” (1977), “Blue Valentine” (1978), “Heartattack and Vine” (1980), “Swordfishtrombones” (1983), “Rain Dogs” (1985), and “Franks Wild Years” (1987) followed, and by then Waits was already involved in cinema industry too. His net worth was well set.
Tom first appeared in “Paradise Alley” (1978) starring Sylvester Stallone and Armand Assante, before started a long lasting professional relationship with famous director Francis Ford Coppola. Tom provided music for Coppola’s “One from the Heart” (1980), and later had roles in Francis’ “The Outsiders” (1983), “Rumble Fish” (1983), “The Cotton Club” (1984), and ” Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992). Waits also released three more albums in the ’90s: “Bone Machine” (1992), “The Black Rider” (1993), and “Mule Variations” (1999), with the latter being his highest-charting album to date and also won a Grammy award.
Waits also had roles in Altman’s “Short Cuts” (1993), Jarmusch’s “Coffee and Cigarettes” (2003), “Wristcutters: A Love Story” (2006), “The Book of Eli” (2010), and “Seven Psychopaths” (2012) – all contributed to his net worth.
His last four albums have been “Blood Money” (2002), “Alice” (2002), “Real Gone” (2004), and “Bad as Me” (2011), which have also increased his net worth.
The musician’s songs are quite popular, and have been used in many movies with or without Waits appearing in them; however, he has filed several lawsuits against companies which have used his songs without permission. The first one was against Frito-Lay, and Waits received $2.375 in compensation. He also won cases against Levi’s in 1993, Audi in 2000, and Opel in 2005.
Regarding his personal life, Tom Waits married Kathleen Brennan, a screenwriter, in 1980, and has three children with her. He met her at the filming of Coppola’s “One from the Heart”, and she became his co-author and a significant influence on his work. They are living in Sonoma County, California.

1 | "Blind Love" is one of my first country songs. I like Merle Haggard. Most of those other guys, though, sound like they're all just drinking tea and watching their waist and talking to their accountant. This one I think subscribes to some of that roadhouse feel. |
2 | He is one of the standards by which I measure all singers. (On Harry Belafonte) |
3 | I love Burroughs (William S. Burroughs). He's like a metal desk. He's like a still, and everything that comes out of him is already whiskey. |
4 | The blues is like a planet. It's an enormous topic. You can't ignore the impact that it has had and continues to have on the whole musical culture. It's a tree that everyone is swinging from. Without it, I don't know where I would be. It's indelible and indispensable. |
5 | I knelt at the altar of Ray Charles for years. I worked at a restaurant, and that's all there was on the jukebox. |
6 | Commercials are an unnatural use of my work ... it's like having a cow's udder sewn to the side of my face. Painful and humiliating. |
7 | All hardware items must be admired for their sonic properties: pitchforks, egg beaters, crowbars, fireplace grates, shovels, anvils, rebars [the structural reinforcement rods used in poured concrete], trash cans - the list goes on and on and they're all waiting to be played. |
8 | If Michael Jackson wants to work for Pepsi, why doesn't he just get himself a suit and an office in their headquarters and be done with it? |
9 | I hate Disneyland. It primes our kids for Las Vegas. |
10 | I like to walk out of a restaurant with enough gas to open a Mobil station. |
11 | I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. |
12 | No, I don't have a drinking problem except when I can't get a drink. |
13 | Champagne for my real friends, real pain for my sham friends. |

1 | Before she was an established actress Winona Ryder once babysat for Tom's children. |
2 | Lives in California. [August 2001] |
3 | Member of the "Sons of Lee Marvin". Along with Jim Jarmusch (Founder). A private and clandestine organisation consisting of invited members whom could plausibly be Lee Marvin's son. |
4 | Beyond the aforementioned Bob Dylan and Captain Beefheart, Waits is a big fan of Frank Sinatra, Thelonious Monk, the Rolling Stones, Gavin Bryars, the Lounge Lizards, The Pogues, Leonard Cohen, Little Richard, James Brown, Frank Zappa, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon and Prince. His number one favorite album of all time "In the Wee Small Hours" by Sinatra. |
5 | His father, Frank, was a teacher at the largest high school in Los Angeles, Belmont High School. |
6 | Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 14, 2011. The other inductees were Darlene Love, Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Leon Russell and Dr. John. |
7 | Member of the "Sons of Lee Marvin". Along with Jim Jarmusch (Founder). A private and humorous group consisting of invited members whom could plausibly be Lee Marvin's son. |
8 | Lives in Sonoma County, California. |
9 | His role in Domino (2006) is immediately preceded by his own song "Jesus Gonna Be Here," from his 1992 album "Bone Machine". |
10 | All of his recent original songs are credited as being written by both Waits and his wife Kathleen Brennan, although some of them are written solely by Waits. |
11 | His album "Rain Dogs" is mentioned in the script for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). |
12 | Originally slated to play Lefty, one of the singing cowboys in A Prairie Home Companion (2006). |
13 | Being a family friend of the Coppolas, he performed at the wedding of Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze. |
14 | Bears such a striking resemblance to actor Ron Perlman that he was once credited under the name "Ron Perlman" on a movie poster. |
15 | A big Baz Luhrmann fan. |
16 | Is a good friend of Keith Richards who makes frequent appearances as a guitarist on his records. |
17 | He has said that Bob Dylan is his favorite songwriter and his main influence for initially getting into music. He contributes his shift to more experimental, eccentric music starting with the album "Swordfishtrombones" to the influence of Don Van Vliet. Ironically, Dylan's more recent work has been said to be comparable to Waits' music. |
18 | His maternal grandmother, Olga Regina Olsen, was the daughter of Norwegian parents (her family was from Oslo). Tom's other ancestry is English, Scottish, Scots-Irish (Northern Irish), German, Swiss-German, and Welsh. |
19 | The photo on the cover of his album "Rain Dogs" includes a man who many believe to be him. It was one of a series of photos taken at the Cafe Lehmitz in Hamburg by the Swedish photographer Anders Petersen. Waits reportedly saw the photo at an exhibition, was taken by the similarity of him and the man in the photo, and asked permission from the photographer to use it as an album cover. |
20 | He converted a 4 cubic yard metal box (intended as a debris dumpster) into a musical instrument called a "Strata Dumpster" (aka "Dumpstalele"). He cut a 2 foot hole into one side, and streched seven piano strings across it, fastening them with two welded bridges. The strings can be plucked, strummed or bowed. He describes the sound as "trainlike and huge, like trash day with a purpose." |
21 | Owns obscure and custom made instruments such as a Chamberlin Music Master 600 (an analog synthesizer manufactured in the 1960s) and a photon clarinet ("[It] sounds like a keyboard lobster dying on a campfire."). |
22 | Shops at hardware stores for items to be used as percussion instruments. |
23 | Uses a large collection of electric megaphones to create unusual tonal effects on his recordings. One of his favorites is a 1944 vintage issued by the US Navy Bureau of Ships, manufactured by Guided Radio Corp. of New York. |
24 | Children: Kellesimone (b. 1983), Casey Xavier (b. 1985), Sullivan (b. 1993). |
25 | Frito-Lay used an unauthorized sample of his song "Step Right Up" in one of their commercials. He successfully sued for an undisclosed amount of money. Frito-Lay unsuccessfully counter-sued. |
26 | Close friends with the Coppola family including Nicolas Cage; often cast in Francis Ford Coppola movies. |
27 | Close friend of Chuck E. Weiss, a fellow L.A. scenester and co-founder of The Viper Room with Johnny Depp, and frequently mentions him in lyrics and liner notes on his records. |
