Tommy Lasorda was raised with four brothers by his parents Sabatino and Carmella Lasorda, who were immigrants from Italy.

Before Tommy became a renowned baseball manager, he played baseball from minor leagues to the MLB, but wasn`t quite successful. In the MLB he played for the Brooklyn Dodgers for two seasons, before he was bought by the Kansas City Athletics, who traded him the same year to the New York Yankees. However, he capped two games for the Denver Bears before he was sold back to the Dodgers, but didn`t make a single play.
Nevertheless, he played in the International league for the Montreal Royals, with who he had moderate success, winning Governor`s Cups consecutively from 1951 until 1954 and again 1958. He was eventually released by the Dodgers in 1960.

Following the end of his playing career, Tommy wanted to become a coach; he took his first step with the Dodgers as a scout from 1961 until 1965. The following year he was appointed as the manager of the Pocatello Chiefs., then three years later, Tommy was hired as the Dodgers AAA Pacific Coast League manager for the Spokane Indians, serving in the position for two years before the whole team was moved to Albuquerque and became the Albuqurque Dukes for the 1972 season, and in 1973 he became the champion with his team, winning the PCL Championship. The same year he was hired as the third base coach for the Dodgers, under manager Walter Alston. Three years later, after Alston`s retirement, Tommy became the new Los Angeles Dodgers manager, and stayed in the position for the next 20 years, increasing his net worth by a large margin as he signed several lucrative contracts.

During his reign, the Dodgers won two World Series championships, firstly in 1981 and the second in 1988. He had a record of 1,599 wins, which makes him 16th manager with most wins in the MLB, and 1,439 losses. Thanks to his successful career, Tommy received several prestigious awards; in 1977 he was the UPI & AP Manager of the Year, and in 1981 he was named AP Manager of the Year. In 1988 he was the recipient of the Baseball America Manager of the Year and Sporting News Co-Manager of the Year awards, and in 2000 he received Amos Alonzo Stagg Coaching Award. Also, in 1997 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and his jersey number (2), was retired by the Dodgers the same year.

Although he has retired both as a player and coach, Tommy has stayed in the game, serving as the Special Advisor to the Dodger’s Chairman, after Frank McCourt bought the team in 2004.

Speaking about his personal life, Tommy Lasorda has been married to Jo since 1950; the couple has two children – one of whom passed away from AIDS.
