All of these achievements ensured the position of his wealth.

Ueli started climbing at a young age, and had already achieved the 9th difficulty rating in climbing at the age of 17. A year later, he climbed the Bonatti Pillar in the Mont Blanc massif as well as the North Face of the Eiger. He made one of his earliest notable achievements in 2004 when he climbed the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau within 25 hours alongside Stephan Siegrist. The following year, he was featured in the climbing magazine “Climb” for his “Khumbu-Express Expedition”, through which he was rated one of the three best alpinists in Europe. The expedition consisted of climbing the north wall of Cholaste and the east wall of Taboche both at around 6400 meters high. His net worth started to increase as he got more exposure due to his achievements.

In 2008, Steck broke off an ascent to Annapurna due to an avalanche threat. He climbed to assist climber Inaki Ochoa de Olza however, the latter died despite the help. During the same year, he became the first recipient of the Eiger Award thanks to his mountaineering achievements. In 2013, he was exposed to the international media after escalating into a dangerous confrontation with Sherpas while they were at the Mount Everest South Col route. Later in the year, he soloed the Lafaille route on Annapurna, and conquered the highest part of the face making it one of the most impressive climbs in the history of Himalayan climbs – he took a total of 28 hours from base camp to summit and back again.

In 2015, Ueli soloed the ascent of Annapurna leading to his second Piolet d’Or. He also set a new record for the North Face of the Eiger in just 2 hours 22 minutes and 50 seconds. The following year, he found the bodies of David Bridges and Alex Lowe on Shishapangma, who were killed in an avalanche in 1999.

During preparations for an attempt without supplemental oxygen to climb the Hornbein route on the West Ridge of Everest, his partner suffered frostbite, however, he carried on the ascen accompanied by Yannick Graziani, but 300m below the summit he fell a kilometer down. The cause of the fall is unknown but his body was found and transported back to Kathmandu.

For his personal life, it is known that Steck worked as a carpenter while not training for climbing. He never married, and resided in Ringgenberg near Interlaken, Switzerland.
