From an early age Vasyl became drawn to boxing, and being trained by his father, Anatoly only helped him develop his skills. He was also interested in ice hockey, but credits his father for literally stepping into the ring, and not onto the ice hockey rink.
His amateur career started in 2007 when he competed at the World Championships held in Chicago, USs, though Moscow was first named as the host of the event, but after not meeting needed criteria, the championship was transferred to Chicago. Vasyl reached the semi-final in which he lost to Albert Selimov, his only loss during his amateur career. On the other hand, he amassed 396 victories, winning gold medals at 2008 Olympic Games in the Featherweight division, and 2012 Olympics, but this time in the Lightweight division. He also won gold at World Championships in Milan 2009, and Baku 2011, and was also a gold medallist at the 2008 European Championships held in Liverpool, UK.
Following the end of the 2012 Olympics, Vasyl became a professional, and signed a contract with Top Rank after negotiating with a number of promoters. He made his debut on the 12th October 2013, fighting against José Ramirez, recording his first professional win finishing the fight in the fourth round with a knockout.
In his second career fight, Vasyl tried to become the quickest featherweight champion, but lost to Orlando Salido by a split decision. However, he continued with his aspirations to become a champion, and in his third career fight won the vacant WBO featherweight title after he defeated Gary Russell Jr., by majority decision, and joined Saensak Muangsurin as the only boxer to win a title in his third career match.
In his next three fights, Vasyl defended his title by defeating Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo, Gamalier Rodriguez and Romulo Koasicha, which increased his net worth. In 2016 he decided to change category and fight in the junior lightweight division, and in his first fight challenged Román Martínez for the title at Madison Square Garden, New York City, recording his sixth career win, ending the match in the fifth round by a knockout, thus becoming the new WBO junior lightweight champion, and the quickest boxer to win two world titles. After the win, he waited for challengers and defended his title four times, as he fought successfully against Nicholas Walters, Jason Sosa, Miguel Marriaga, and Guillermo Rigondeaux, all of his opponents retiring from their corners.
Because of his dominance in the junior lightweight division, Vasyl has decided to move up a notch, and his next fight will be in the lightweight division, against a suitable opponent.
When it comes to his personal life, Vasyl is married to Elena, and the couple has a child together, but no further private info is available about this star boxer, who is currently ranked No. 1 active boxer in the super featherweight category.
