[on his roles] I've always been invited through the back door. It hasn't been easy for me. I would never have gotten the jobs I did without the advent of cable television, which brought back the kinds of raw, authentic leading actors you had in the seventies: [Robert] Duvall, Ed Harris, Tommy Lee Jones.

[on his childhood] I was known as the kid who raised himself... my mother wanted to party and have a life. She was young. I grew up with people smoking dope on the porch. I'm not sad about it at all. And she's really showed up since. But when I was young she didn't do a lot, other than making sure I had clogging lessons.

Goggins appeared in an extended trailer (or abbreviated pilot) for a fourth season of the low-rated but critically-beloved TV show, Veronica Mars (2004). Instead of being a college undergraduate, as she was at the end of season three, in the spec season four, Veronica has graduated from college and the FBI Academy and is starting her first day as a FBI agent. The pitch contained a whole new cast of, heretofore unseen, characters and, except for Veronica herself, none of the characters from the show's previous seasons. Goggins was cast as Veronica's FBI supervisor. The CW failed to pick up this new version of Veronica Mars (2004) and the show was canceled.
