A native of Eastman, Willie actually grew up in migrant farm communities based in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, along with ten siblings. After finishing high school, Willie enrolled at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he started playing football. Thanks to his great performance, he received a full scholarship, which certainly helped his financial status. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, after which he furthered his education by enrolling at North Carolina Central University in Durham, from which he obtained Juris Doctor degree three years later. Willie returned to Stuart and took the Florida Bar exam and was admitted, after which Willie started the first black law firm in Martin County, Gary, Williams, Parenti, Finney, Lewis, McManus, Watson & Sperando, P.L. Little by little, his firm started growing, and the victories against large corporation increased his net worth to a large degree. One of the most successful wins was a settlement for $500 million to an unnamed Mississippi client, which added a significant amount to his wealth, just one of many multi-million dollar suits won by Gary and his firm.

Thanks to his growing success, Willie was featured in numerous variety talk-shows, including “The Oprah Winfrey Show’, among others.

Also, in 1999 he co-founded Black Family Channel with Cecil Fielder, a basketball player, former professional boxer Evander Holyfield, singer Marlon Jackson, and Alvin James, TV broadcaster. The success of the channel also added to Gary’s wealth, however, the network was closed in 2007.

Unfortunately, during his career Willie also had several troubling situations, including paying massive fees to several other firms and clients due to criminal misconduct, legal malpractice, fraud, and federal and state racketeering with which he was charged. In 2012, he had an order of $12.5 million against him, conversely, a recent judgmental award saw him garner $22.5 million, assessed at over $1,000 per hour for his services. Unsurprisingly, Forbes has Gary listed in the top 50 US attorneys, and Esquire rates him as one of the “100 Most Influential African Americans.”

Regarding his personal life, Willie has been married to Gloria since the ‘70s, with whom he has four children. Also, Willie has two children with Diana Gowins, to whom he pays $5000 in child support. He was paying as much as $28,000 but managed to reduce the payment, due to Diana’s mismanagement of the funds.

Willie is a well-known philanthropist; together with his wife he started the Gary Foundation in 1994, through which they fund scholarships for at-risk students wishing to attend college. Furthermore, he has donated millions to his alma mater, and other black universities across the USA.
