Willie grew up in Brooklyn, New York and went to the Samuel J. Tilden High School, where he starred in baseball, so that in 1972, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 7th round of the MLB Draft.
Randolph made his professional debut in 1975, the sixth-youngest player in the National League, but after only a few months, the Pirates traded him to the New York Yankees in exchange for Doc Medich. Willie had a fantastic career with the Yankees, staying with them for 13 seasons and being their co-captain from 1986 to 1988. Randolph won two World Series with the Yankees; the first one against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1977, and then again a year later.
